COMMITTEE

Our Committee is voted for by members every January as places become available. Committee members take a position for three years and can be re-elected for a second term.

Meeting three times a year, the committee oversees the running of the association and ensures representation of members’ interests as well as consideration for development in to under represented areas. All of our committee are current teaching members. This is one of the things that makes the Music Teachers’ Association unique.

The Officers of the association include the President, Past-president, President-elect, secretary and treasurer and oversee the strategy and direction. These positions are also elected for a two or three year period.

There are currently three members of staff employed by the Music Teachers’ Association.

Lewis Edney
Director of Music – Bishop Wordsworth’s Grammar School, Salisbury

Before joining the teaching profession Lewis spent 15 years as a professional trombonist and now looks to promote the participation and benefits of performance throughout his work, including building partnerships and relationships in as many directions as possible to strengthen and promote music making.

Margaret Edwards
Teacher of Music at Bradfield College, Reading (commencing Sept 2021)

Margaret is currently concluding her PGCE and is about to undergo her NQT years at Bradfield College as a Teacher of Music. Prior to this, Margaret earned a BA and MA in musicology from Durham University. Although new to the teaching field, Margaret is a huge advocate for developing choral traditions for young adults in schools.

Tim Garrard
Director of Music at Westminster School, London
Tim is a huge advocate of meaningful and sustained partnership in all its forms, linking together teachers, pupils, music departments, institutions, charities, and educational phases from both the maintained and independent sectors. He is a trustee of the music education charity, Musical Boroughs Trust.

Patrick Johns
Patrick is a teacher at The Tiffin Girls’ School, Kingston, a professional trombone player and a radio producer for BBC Radio 2 (Top Brass, Country Christmas, Jazz Junctions).

David is Director of Music at Cheltenham College where he has developed boy and girl chorister schemes for local primary school pupils and has most recently formed a partnerships orchestra.

Mark Penrose
Mark is Director of Performing Arts at Bilton Grange Prep School, which has recently merged with Rugby School as of January 2020. In addition to classroom teaching and consultancy, Mark has taught on British Kodály courses and delivered training for iGCSE and A Level Music.
